Suture means :
1. A piece of thread
2. Uniting the edges.

3. Suture can be of ;
Monofilament
Multifilament

4. Qualities of an Ideal Suture Materials
- Tensile strength
- Non-capillary
- Non-reactive
- Knot able
- Smooth & uniform

5. Classification Of Suture Materials
Suture
Natural Synthetic
Absorbable
e.g. catgut
Non-absorbable
e.g. silk; cotton
Absorbable
e.g. Polyglycolic acid
Non-absorbable
e.g. Nylon

6. Natural Absorbable Suture
1.Catgut:
-Obtained from Submucosa of Sheep intestine and Serosa of
Beef Intestine.

7. Advantages of catgut:
- Adequate functional strength
- Easy to handle
- Gets absorbed
- cause no strangulation
Disadvantages of catgut:
 Cost
Early absorption in some individual

8. Catgut

Chromicised catgut
-Untreated - Treated
- Absorbed faster - Slowly absorbed
- Cause tissue - No reaction

9. Natural Non-absorbable Suture
Silk ??
 Made from silkworm fiber.
Advantages:
- Cheap
- availability
- Easy to sterilize
- Easy to handle
- Good tissue tolerance
Disadvantages:
- Capillary action

10. Cotton Thread
Made from cotton fiber
Advantages
- Cheap
- availability
- Easy to sterilize
- Easy to handle
- Good tissue tolerance
Disadvantages:
- Capillary action

11. Synthetic Absorbable Sutures
Polyglactin (Vicryl)Polyglycolic Acid (Dexon) Polydioxone (PDS)
Polyglyconate (Maxon)

12. Advantages:
-adequate functional strength
- Easy to handle
- Gets absorbed
- cause no strangulation
Disadvantages of catgut:
- Cost
- Early absorption in some individual
