GoTap is an Android app which saves users’ cost on mobile data usage through restricting apps that drain data without users’ consent. During a user research in India, we interviewed around 40 people and observed that they switched the mobile data connection on and off frequently to prevent unnecessary data waste. This behavior leads to a problem: those popular IM apps like WhatsApp and FB messenger are no longer instant while mobile connection is off. This is why we designed GoTap to resolve the problem. Users can set up only selected apps stay connected to the internet through the 3G/4G network and restrict the connection of other apps through GoTap. This character helps users to enjoy the instancy of apps like WhatsApp and FB messenger. On the other hand, users still can allow restricted apps to connect to 3G/4G by one easy tap until the operating screen turn off. Furthermore, GoTap calculates the frequency of attempt to connect internet from restricted apps. This function tells the users which apps waste mobile data most. What makes the app even better is that the APK size is only 800KB, a very compatible size for the majority of low performance Android phones in India. What We Found
From Real Users
We visited Delhi and Bangalore for 8 user interviews,
2 focus groups and more than 10 times street
interviews in February 2016. Totally we met around
40 Android users to find out how they use the
internet through smartphone. The most valuable
finding was that they controlled the mobile data
usage very carefully.
The advanced users would disable the pre-installed
apps to avoid unnecessary data consumption.
This behavior caused they cannot really enjoy the
convenience of the mobile internet and killed the
real evolvement that mobile internet brought to our
generation.

3. The Problem
We Want to Resolve
We mainly started our interview with WhatsApp, the most
popular IM app in Indian. But accidentally found out that they
still used phone calls and SMS a lot, which meant WhatsApp
was not their main communication tool, even with its
popularity. This is a really odd situation. Finally we found the
answer after user interview. They only reply message when the
mobile data was switched on or when there was a WiFi
connection. Since the public WiFi was not common in India and
they did not stayed connected through 3G/4G network all the
time.
This is why they still used phone calls and SMS to communicate
with each other.
Thus WhatsApp was not instant for them and
they often replied message late.

4. German India
Then our research narrowed down to why they need to switch
mobile data on and off frequently? We surveyed some data
reports after user research. There are more than 100 million
smart phone users in India. The per capita GDP of an Indian is
US $1,500 which is relatively low compare to that of an
German, US $45,000. Moreover, 1GB mobile data plan costs an
Indian 0.2% of GDP whereas it costs a German only 0.02% of
GDP.
This fact indicates that Indians have a very strong demand in
saving mobile data.
The ratio of mobile data expense to income for
an Indian is ten times to the ratio for a German.

Our design purpose is very specific. We wanna help Indian to control mobile data consumption while still enjoying the convince of mobile internet. They can set up only selected apps
