5. STRENGTH OF AYURVEDA TO
CHILD HEALTH CARE
In Veda too many references are found .
Like Rig-Veda and atharva Veda –
1 - Nourishment of fertilized zygote
2 – Intestinal worms infestation in children
3 – Rakshoghna karma and drugs( aseptic and antiseptics )
4 – Medha janaka drugs (brain tonics)
6. Even in puranas like garud puran, skand puran, valmiki Ramayana,
kumara sambhava manusmriti and many more etc., have some of the
material of Kaumarabhritya is available.
In Ayurveda kasayap Samhita highlights the depth and speciality of this
branch.

7. IMPORTANCE OF KAUMARABHRITYA
कौमारभृत्य अष्टानां ित्राणां आधमच्यिेआयवेदस्य महिो ।
देवानातमव हव्यषुः अनेनतह संवतधिितमिरे तचतकत्सति।।

Kaumarabhritya is attributed top priority among Astanga
as that of fire among all devtas . As it is the crucial stage
of foundation for future life only when the other
specialists like Kayachikitsa would afford to manage the
cases.
8. निरुन्द्क्त -
कु मार + भृत्य
the word Kaumarabhritya is composed of two words -
“कमारयति क्रीडति”, “कमारं क्रीडायाम”, “कतत्सिो मारोस्येति वा”।

KUMARA - who is more interested to play the game.
or which morbidity rate is high, prone to death.
kumara – was used in Veda's in the sense of a child, boy,
son, youth, etc.
while in Sanskrit literature this word has been specially used
for kartikeya the son of lord Shiva .
the children of royal family were also called kumara.
9. 2 – BHRITYA - word is originally derived from root भृने means to
Bear (in womb), wear, nourish support and maintain.
The word Kaumarabhritya is coined for the subject which is
mainly concerned with the maintenance along with the care of
child .
Experts of this speciality are known as kumara bhisak and their
nature of work has been considered very tough than experts of
other specialities of Ayurveda.
10. It to be detailed science about nourishment of the child, nurse
[dhatri], the vitiation of breast milk and its treatment, disease
due to the intake of vitiated breast milk and graha rogas
together with treatment.

11. DURING PREGNANCY
Putreshti yanja is told after conception,this can be interpretive as
precaution to avoid dushta prajaa due to poorvajanma krita papa karma and
to keep mother mentally healthy.
Garbhastapaaka aushadhi gana has been explained.
Mother should avoid उत्कटववशमकश्रथिासि, वातमूत्रपुरीषवेगावरोधि,
दारुणािुश्रचतव्यायमसेवि, प्रममताशि as it will lead to
garbhasraava,garbhapaata.
13. JAATAMAATRA SHISHU PARICHARYA

STIMULUS TO THE BABY- sheetodakena ushnodakena vaa mukha parishekam

ULBA PARIMARJANAM - VERNIX CASEOSA removal with saindhava and ghritha
MUKHA VISHODHANAM - Removal of fetal mebranes and mucous plug from the air
passages nasal or oral cavity of the baby (Cha.Sa.8/43)
GARBHODAKA VAMANAM - GHEE mixed with Saindhava is administered to baby to
induce vomiting.
NABHEE NAALA CHEDANAM - CHARAKA- karapaas sutra at 8 angula distance from
navel side and cut with ardhadhaara shastra and loosely tie it around neck. smear with kushta
taila for easy healing and prevent secondary infections.
ASH.HRD -4 angulas and ASH.SAN- two knots should be made and cut in between.

PICHU DHAARANAM - PICHU for prasooti klesha, simplest but effective due to
longer duration.
UDAKA KUMBHA STHAAPANAM - Water pot processed with mantras should be
kept along the side of the head.
PRAASHANAM for the first day - Attainment of medha aayu and Bala. It also aims at
speeding passage of meconium.

15. NAVA JAATA SHISHU PARICHARYA
PRAASHANAM - Before the establishment of lactation:
1st day: ghee+honey+gold- made to lick,
2nd and 3rd day: ghee made with lakshmana A.H.U
after establishment of lactation: suvarnapraashana K.Su, Hemaadiprashana A.H.U
STANYA PAANAM - RIGHT breast should be advised to be sucked.
RAKSHA KARMAM - Rakshoghna karmas: The concept of graha and bhoota are
closely linked with Hindu mythology. In modern view, this can be compared with
impacts on health due to unknown causes, infections or psychiatric disorders. The
rakshoghna vidhi once again reveals the scientific sense of our ancient scholars
regarding the nosocomial infections. Drugs Khadira, pilu, parushaka, mantras

17. VEDANA ADHYAAYAM
Acharya Kashyapa enlisted 34 clinical conditions in
Vedanaadhyaya of Sutrasthana.
The term “vedana” here refers to the knowledge of signs
and symptoms in a child which are indicative of a
particular disease.
Due to vaakcheshtayorasaamarthyam in neonates the
diseases are difficult to diagnose &Vedanadhyaya meant
for spot diagnosis of a diseases in a children

Administration of the medicine in children Acharya's clearly
mention that the nature of the medicine to the children should be
tasty and congruent and other aspects like dosage would also be of
speciality.

The word kumara limits the age up to 16 years, there for the maximum age
limit for kumara is birth to 16 years.
Ayu pariksha in children was described at depth in order to assess not only
the longevity but also the luck of future life which encroaches the field of
the science of ‘forecasting’. This examination is also helpful to verify the
congenital anomalies of the child.
20. Embryology is beautifully described by Harreta.
Apart from day wise and month wise growth of embryo, he gave
special description of establishment of places of different vaayus
in the body.
Pre maturity is described as “apoorna divasa garbha”.
Describe 5 ksheera Dosha .
Utphullika are described along with graha roga .
Harita stated that Bala chikitsa means the knowledge of
fertilization, pregnancy, and labour, besides the therapeutics of

About the gunas of paediatrician Acharya's says that
paediatrician should be more proficient in pathologies and
their observation to initiate treatment as the nature and
dosage of medicine depend upon the gravity and severity
of the disease.
In paediatrics the diagnosis as well as prognosis on the
strength of clinical feature should be made at the earliest
possible so that the scientific line of management should
be fixed soon ,due to this delicate state of the child only.
22. Acharya describe about graha roga, which is more
incidental in paediatric age.
In context of graha roga chikitsa Acharya's describe about
dhupana karma [fumigation] rakshoghna karma.
धूपश्चैवानधूपश्च प्रतिधूपश्च जीवक !
तत्रतवधो धूप उतिष्ट: कमि भेदाि् तचतकत्सकै : !!

23. Several measures were widely described for the purpose of
conception in women and also the desired sex of the baby. This is
named as PUNSVAN SANSAKAR it may be a controversial topic
in the outlook of western medicine but definitely holds interesting
for research.
Several events of psychology & psychiatry are referred in
paediatrics. Ex. The toys to be play in kumaragara [nursery]
should be beautiful but not fearful.
the environment should be pleasant and a child never be
frightened.
24. The child is very delicate that’s why they cannot afford mistakes.
The role of paediatrician is always critical as he has look after the
state of pregnancy and dhatri health's too for welfare of the child.
In the medical field dhatri and child always have to face critical
situations in view of child's delicate and risk prone condition.
Acharya's describe that in Dosha, dushya and mala remain in low
potency in children, so that dosage of medicine should also be
low amount.

25. CONCLUSION
Child life is one of the major divisions in Ayurveda.
More or less information are available in almost all the Ayurvedic
text book that brihatryi and laghutrayi.
