4. What happened?
• LinkedIn announced on Jan 19, 2017, that new desktop
version is biggest change since the site’s inception
• Designed to be:
– In line with the app
– Simpler navigation
– More intuitive usage
5. In reality…
• More functions are hidden
• Need to dig through or click on seemingly unrelated areas
• Many popular features were eliminated
• Less functionality on free accounts
6. Areas of Change
• Home screen navigation
• Profiles
• Searching
• Network Management
• Jobs
17. Sweeping changes
• Everyone (including you) will have to click on “See More” to
view your full summary or details for work history that is NOT
the current job
• Your most recent articles, activity, and posts are visible on
your profile
• Sections now subdivided into 3 categories: Background, Skills,
and Accomplishments
18. Make an impact
• Since only the first few sentences are seen without clicking,
they must be awesome attention-grabbers.
19. Chopped Experience?
• Current or most recent job shows all
the details
• All of your work history is there AND
is still searchable on LinkedIn
• However, viewers need to commit to
the click to see the additional details
• (By the way, if someone downloads
the PDF, they DO get all of the
details.)
20. Adding new sections
• No more pretty
“tiles” to click
• Look for the bar on
the right
• Categories
condensed
21. That’s an Accomplishment?
These include:
• Publications
• Certifications
• Courses
• Projects
• Honors & Awards
• Patents
• Test Scores
• Organizations
• Languages
• (scroll to see them all)
23. Major changes (and complaints)
• One of the biggest loss of functionality – NO MORE Advanced
search features
• NOW funneled through Boolean search terms
• Some filters available
– But previously common ones are now on Premium accounts only
24. Starting a search
• Everything starts from the same search box
• Hit “enter” to get the different categories
27. Search Filters
• Click on “down” arrows to see all the
features
• Not as precise as the old Advanced
Search
• Can save these search parameters
• If you want more filters, you must pay
more
32. Invitations I sent
• Need to look at the person’s PROFILE to see it – no more
listing of all the invites I sent
33. Finding a specific person
• Default: Recently added
• Drop-down allows it to be sorted
by first or last name
• The “search connections” creates
a SEARCH and takes you to that
screen…
34.
35. Hey! Where did the network notices go?
• LinkedIn used to prompt you to reach out to people on work
anniversaries, birthdays, or job changes
• Used to be on Home screen and Connections page
• Now….
38. Recruiter growth on LinkedIn
• 94% of recruiters are active on LinkedIn
• Only 36% of job seekers are fully engaged on the site
• 48% of recruiters use LinkedIn as their only social media
outlet
• 40% of job seekers use the mobile app
LinkedIn implemented lots of changes for recruiters to
encourage heavier usage
39. The latest trick
• It is possible to let recruiters know you are looking without
notifying your current employer
– HOWEVER, they make no guarantees!
• Dive into your preferences on the Jobs tab…
40.
41. Preferences, screen 1
Be sure to point out:
• Desired locations
• Experience level
• Industries
• Company size
42. Preferences, screen 2
DON’T stop scrolling!
Next options:
• The “discreet” notification to make
you show up in more recruiter
searches
• Define the type of job
• Add a personal introduction – this is
different from your summary and
specific to job searching
• SHARE your profile:
• Syncs up LinkedIn with external
job applications to automatically
send your profile with the
application
43. Features hiding in plain sight
• Not new, but harder to see
• Make full use of Job Alerts
• Review jobs you saved or applied to
44. Creating a job alert
• Start search as normal
• Play with filters and terms to perfect results
• Click on “Create search alert”
45. Managing alerts
• Click on “manage alerts” from any job
searching screen
• (look out – they are small)
• Revise how often sent or even delete
• Need different search terms? Set up
different alerts
47. Mastering the new website
• Dive into icons to understand ALL the features
• Make the first line of your profile a strong branding
statement
• Use Boolean search terms and filters
• Find your friends and stay in touch
• Use the Open job search to get in front of recruiters
